A message from Daniela:
Dear everyone,
Here is an update on our activities at Namdroling Monastery in the first half of 2009, additional to the upkeep of the dispensary and the covering of the medical costs of our students.
- 1,500 monks and nuns attending school have been vaccinated against typhoid (165,000 INR; )
- All the monks in class 1 to 3 and all school nuns got their first hygiene kit for this school year containing toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, detergent bar, soap box, clothes brush and a towel (84,500 INR)
- Support for Dawa Tamang, who through a viral infection became temporarily paralyzed and has been in intensive care for the last six weeks (50,000 INR)
- Distribution of sanitary pads to the nuns. The first shipment of 500 packs a 8 pieces came to 8,750 INR
- In return for the health check up for the students, we paid for the maintenance blood testing equipment in the hospital (9,750 INR)
- Repair of the water filter on the monastic school grounds (64,450 INR)
Planned activities for the second half of 2009:
- Plastic surgery for several Namdroling nuns and monks with burns, cleft lips etc., but also local Indians, performed by my cousin, who will cover the costs through his own efforts. For more information, please see www.lingamma.com
- Furnishing of a dental set-up including a dental chair, equipment and the salary for a dentist (no quote yet)
- Hygiene and health education programs for both teachers and students, developed by Dr. Ananth, resident doctor at Namdroling Monastery
- Based on the findings of the health check-up, iron tablets, de-worming tablets will be given to all the students and a scabies eradication program will be implemented. Children who have shown abnormalities will be checked by specialists and further treatment determined.
