Patagonia
Patagonia’s owner, Yvon Chouinard, founded the company on his mission driven principles of environmental protection. He says “we begin with the assumption that our business relies on natural resources to stay alive, and we are therefore a part of the system and obligated to maintain it.”
This vision comes through loud and clear in Patagonia’s mission statement: “Make the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, and use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”
<>Patagonia is committed to reducing the environmental impact of the products they make. As a “1% For the Planet” company, they also dedicate significant funding to protecting the environment. “We use environmentally sensitive materials (organic cotton, recycled and recyclable polyester, and hemp among them) and both sponsor and participate in a host of environmental initiatives….to date, we have given some $34 million in grants to grassroots environmental organizations.”Patagonia is also committed to corporate social responsibility throughout their supply chain: “we try to work with factories that share our values of integrity and environmentalism.” Patagonia requires third party audits of all manufacturing facilities to ensure their suppliers meet Patagonia’s high standards for product quality, social responsibility, fair labor practices and environmental footprint.
If that weren’t already impressive enough, Patagonia is also committed to providing great quality, fashionable, high performance clothing. For every sport they make clothing for, they strive to continually develop new and innovative technology and materials that improve their products’ functional performance. They even stand behind their products with their “Ironclad Guarantee:” “if one of our products does not perform to your satisfaction, return it to Patagonia for a repair, replacement or refund.”
